More about tipping

Tipping is a country-specific etiquette. Tipping is the norm in Canada and the United States but is perceived elsewhere as gratuitous or offensive. It is not customary to tip in Japan. Often the anticipated sum is based on the country and size of the bill.

Why tip?

Tipping as mentioned above, is very common in the US and Canada and it is seen as a gesture of appreciation toward an employee of a service where you were served for purchasing a service, ordering dinner, dyed your hair, brought you where you wanted, helped with the luggage and etc.

How much to tip?

There is an unspoken rule of tipping 10%-20%. This is one of those based on whether or not you liked the service. Not tipping is usually interpreted as you did not like the service.

Why tipping is important for employees?

Usually employees that work with institutions like restaurants and coffee houses are paid low wages and depend on what they get from visitors and customers in the form of tips. This money is then usually distributed equally among all the employees. Each position is sometimes given a different percentage of what they get when the money is distributed at the end of the night. The tip money is usually 4 or more times bigger than what they are paid.
